Fundamental Methodist Conference, Inc.
The Fundamental Methodist Conference, Inc. is a body of independent Methodists congregations who were organized in 1942. They can trace their origins to the three major Methodist conferences in the United States. The Fundamental Methodist Conference, Inc. is made up of the Methodist Episcopal, the Methodist Episcopal South, and the Methodist Protestant Church that united under the name of The Methodist Church in 1939.
The Fundamental Methodist Conference, Inc. was established in 1942 under the name Independent Fundamental Methodist Church at Ash Grove, Missouri. When they held their first conference in 1944 they changed their name to Fundamental Methodist Church, Inc.
Today the Fundamental Methodist Conference, Inc. has its headquarters in Springfield, Missouri. They hold their annual conference at the Fundamental Methodist Conference Grounds that is near Ash Grove, Missouri. They are a member of the American Council of Christian Churches.
History
The Fundamental Methodist Conference, Inc. has its origins in the Methodist Protestant Church and the Anglican reformation started by brothers John and Charles Wesley and they followed the Wesleyan principles and theology.
The Fundamental Methodist Conference, Inc. is made up of the Methodist Episcopal, the Methodist Episcopal South, and the Methodist Protestant Church that united under the name of The Methodist Church in 1939.
There was distention among the three church groups that had joined together. The John’s Chapel Church was part of the Methodist Protestant Church of Lawrence County, Missouri and had withdrawn from the Methodist Church in August 1942. They elected a committee to begin the process of merging with the Fundamental Methodist. This committee was to establish a constitution and by-laws. The first annual conference was held in Green County, Missouri August 1944; and there were three churches represented. It wasn’t until February 1948 when the church was finally chartered.
Belief
The Fundamental Methodist Conference, Inc. does not baptize infants, but rather, dedicate their children, unlike most of the other Methodist church denominations. Baptism is done by immersion. They allow other churches to join them in their membership even if they had received baptism by sprinkling of pouring.
The government of the Fundamental Methodist Conference is congregational which is different than most of the other Methodist church denominations. The Fundamental Methodist Conference believes they should call their own pastors and should own their own property. There are no church bishops and they should elect their own District Superintendent and Secretary/Treasurer at their annual conference.
The Fundamental Methodist Conference, Inc. believes the Bible is the inspired, authoritative Word of God and is the basis of faith for all members. They live their lives according to the teachings in the Bible.
