Salt Seasonings

Salt in Biblical times is as important in our everyday life. Salt is a basic commodity we use for seasonings and to preserving food. Salt is used symbolically; believers are the salt of the earth. Salt is used in the sacrificial practice, there is a “Covenant of Salt”, and there are even places carrying the name salt.

Rue Seasoning

Rue is only mentioned once in the Bible as a tithe used by the Pharisees. According to Pliny the Great there are many medicinal used for Rue. Jesus proclaimed an exclamation of grief regarding the Pharisees. That they would tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs. Rue was a garden herb.

Cummin Herb

Cummin is a garden herb that is related to carrots. Cummin is an aromatic bitter seed that has been used since Biblical times to season food. Cummin was revealed by Isaiah in the Old Testament teaching about wisdom. Coriander Spice

Coriander seed is mentioned twice in the Old Testament. This is because of its earthly similarity to the heaven bestowed manna. This herb is an annual and of the parsley family, common in Palestine and Syria. It has a tall stalk with small white flowers. The plant emits a disagreeable odor. The seeds are globular, light gray in color and their aromatic flavor is prized in seasoning and cooking. They also have medicinal properties.

Cinnamon Spices

Cinnamon is a member of the laurel family. The bark is used because it produces oil. Quills of spines of the bark and the ground inner rind of the bark are used for sweetening food. Cinnamon oil was treasured as a precious perfume and spice.

Olive/Olive Oil

The Olive is an important food in Israel and a source of oil. Olives was one of the blessings of the Promised Land. Olive oil was used to burn in lamps. It was also used as a holy anointing oil and also to anoint kings and full of goodness. Olive tree and olives were used symbolically. It has been used as an emblem of peace and reconciliation and a symbol of the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

Locust

The locust are one of the few insects mentioned as a clean or allowed source of food. Locusts were fried in flour or honey, or were preserved by being dried. Locusts and wild honey a basic diet in the wilderness for John the Baptist. Locust are a used as an illustration of the judgment of the LORD God against a rebellious nation.
