The Dream and Prayer of Solomon
King Solomon could have asked of the LORD God anything his heart desired. He asked for an understanding heart to judge the people that he may discern between good and bad. Did you know that whatsoever you shall ask in the name of Jesus that will Jesus do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you shall ask any thing in the name Jesus, He will do it. 1 Kings 3:3-15.
Solomon loved the LORD, walking in the statutes of David his father only he sacrificed and burnt incense in high places. This meant Solomon made thousands of burnt offerings on places of worship on the altar.
Solomon went to Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and ask Solomon what He the LORD should give him. Solomon replied that the LORD had showed great mercy to his father David, as he walked before the LORD in truth and in righteousness. The LORD also gave David a son to sit on his throne.
Solomon said, “O LORD my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in. And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.” (1 Kings 3:7-8).
King Solomon asked the LORD for an understanding heart to judge the people that he may discern between good and bad. Then King Solomon said he hoped what he had said pleased the LORD.
The LORD God said unto him, Because thou have asked this thing, and have not asked for himself long life; or riches for himself, nor asked for the life of his enemies; but have asked for himself understanding to discern judgment.
The LORD God granted to King Solomon according to his words a wise and understanding heart so that there would be none like him before him or after him. The LORD God also gave King Solomon which he had not asked for both riches and honor. His statutes and His commandments, as Solomon’s father David did walk, then the LORD would lengthen his days.
What Can This Story Teach Us?
King Solomon was going to have to fill the shoes of a very powerful king who did love and worship the LORD God. King David was loved by the people and loved by the LORD. King Solomon could have asked for anything.
He asked for an understanding heart to judge the people and discernment or a knowing between good and bad. He did not ask for riches or more power or ever for his people to love him. King Solomon wanted wisdom.
If the LORD asked you what you would want from Him what would your answer be? You need to think wisely because the Bible tells us: “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.” (John 14:13-14).
“At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.”(John 16: 26-28).
