What is a Nazarite? Is it possible to be a Nazarite in today’s society?

Nazarite is an Israelite who is consecrated and took a vow of separation and self-service for a specific purpose unto the LORD. We believe that being a Christian means we are to have a change of lifestyles. Are there people today that are willing and ready to do the will or the LORD and not their own will?
Numbers 6:1-23

A Nazarite is an Israelite who is consecrated and took a vow of separation and self-service for a specific purpose unto the LORD. The rules for the Nazarite’s were set forth by the LORD and given to Moses. Either male or female can separate themselves to vow unto the LORD. There were two types of Nazarite the temporary and the perpetual. The temporary was more common. The perpetual Nazarite was Samson, Samuel and John the Baptist.

They are to separate themself to the Lord: The vow of the Nazarite was to express the special desire to draw close to the LORD God and to separate the self from the comforts and pleasures of this world. They shall also separate themselves from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink. Neither shall they drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes or dried grapes. During the time they are separated unto the LORD they shall eat nothing that is made of the vine tree, from the kernels even to the husk.

All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which they shall separate himself unto the LORD. They shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of their head grow.

They should also not come into contact with dead bodies. This included if their father, mother, brother or sister were to die they could not come into contact with them. Their consecration is to the LORD and all the days of their separation they are to be holy unto the LORD. Even if a person was to die suddenly by them; they are defiled and they have to shave their head.

The law of the Nazarite, when the days of his separation are fulfilled: they shall be brought unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: then they shall make an offering unto the LORD. The Nazarite shall shave the head of their separation at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall take the hair of the head of their separation, and put it in the fire which is under the sacrifice of the peace offerings. (Numbers 6:1-23).

The question remains if it is possible in our society today if there can be a Nazarite? We believe that being a Christian means we are to have a change of lifestyles. Jesus tells us in John 18:36 “My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.”
Romans 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Maybe a better question would be if it were possible to make one’s self available to the LORD God. That is to be willing and ready to do His will not our own will. Are we willing to do everything that we are asked to do by the LORD? Likewise are we willing to avoid those things that displease the LORD God?

The LORD God desires an intimate relationship with us, but we cannot obtain it through our own efforts. Making an Nazarite vow without being called by the LORD God would make it impossible to fulfill. There are some things that are not in our control and becoming a Nazarite is one of them.

“But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities. “ Isaiah 64:6-7

“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.” Romans 3:10-12
