David Fleeing From Saul
King Saul wanted David dead! He did not care how or who killed him Saul just wanted David dead. Saul was growing desperate in his hatred of David. He even went to his son Jonathan to murder David. That was not the plan or the Will of the LORD God. David had many people helping him. One was Jonathan who warned his beloved friend of the evil intentions of his father and he also interceded before Saul on David’s behalf. We need to have faith in the knowing that no matter what happens in our lives we will be under the protective care of the LORD. 1 Samuel 19 – 1 Samuel 23
1 Samuel 19:1 opens with King Saul speaking to his son Jonathan and all his servants that they should kill David. Jonathan, who delighted in David, told David that his father Saul sought to kill him. Jonathan told David to hide in a secret place.
Jonathan told David that he would try to speak to his father of the goodness of David and ask that the king not sin against David because David had done good for king Saul. David had slain the Philistine and the LORD brought great salvation for all Israel. Jonathan told Saul he could not take the life of the innocent David without a cause. King Saul swore to Jonathan that he would not slay David. Jonathan called David and told him all these things that Saul had said.
There was another war and David went out and fought with the Philistines. David had slaughtered a great number of then and the rest fled from David. Then David returned to Saul. Saul had an evil spirit from the LORD as he sat in his house with his javelin in his hand. Saul sought to hit David and pin him to the wall with the javelin. David fled, and escaped that night.
Saul sent messengers unto the house of David telling them to watch him, and to slay him in the morning. This time it was Michal, the daughter of Saul and the wife of David, warned David. Michal let David down through a window and David fled and escaped.
Michal took an image, and laid it in the bed, put a pillow of goat’s hair for his pillow, and covered it with a cloth. Michal told the messenger sent by Saul that David was sick. Saul sent the messenger back and told him to bring David in the bed that Saul might slay him. When the messenger came back to Saul with the image in the bed he asked Michal why she had deceived him and sent away his enemy so he could escape.
David had fled and escaped and went to Samuel, the prophet, and told him what had happened with Saul. It was told to Saul that David was at Naioth in Ramah where Samuel lived. Saul sent messengers to take David: when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the Spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.
And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also. Then Saul went to Ramah and the Spirit of God was upon him and Saul prophesied before Samuel. Saul laid down naked all that day and all that night.
1 Samuel 20:1-42 finds David fleeing from Ramah, and went to Jonathan asking him why Saul sought his life. Jonathan did not know that his father was still trying to kill David until David said that because they were friends Saul is keeping this from Jonathan so Jonathan told David that whatever his soul need he would do it for David.
So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David. Jonathan and David had made a plan to test to see if Saul had evil intention toward David. David was expected to be at the kings table during the new moon three day celebration. Jonathan was to tell Saul that David was going to Bethlehem for a yearly sacrifice with his family. David would be hiding in the field where he would stay for three days.
Saul showed that he meant to slay David. So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame. The third Jonathan went out into the field, as it was arranged with David, and shoot arrows beyond where David was hiding meaning David should take haste and run Saul was trying to kill him.
What Can This Story Teach Us?

Michal the daughter of the king and wife of David who warned David that the king was going to have him killed the next morning. She lowered David down through a window so that David could flee and escape from the king, she also Michal took an image, and laid it in the bed, put a pillow of goat’s hair for his pillow, and covered it with a cloth. Then she told the messenger of the king that David was sick.
The LORD God protected David from his enemy. Just like He protects us from those who want to hurt us or cause us harm. Jesus tells His disciples that He sends them out as sheep in the midst of wolves. That they should beware of men who would deliver them up to the councils and afflicts them in the churches, they would be brought before governors. We are hated of all men for His name’s sake. (Matthew 10:16-22).
Jesus said in John: “If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.” (John 15:18-19).
We need to have faith in the knowing that no matter what happens in our lives we will be under the protective care of the LORD.
