What happened on Holy Monday?
Holy Monday is the day Jesus went into the temple and began to cast out those that sold and bought in the temple. Jesus reminds us all that the church, His church is to be called the house of prayer. This lesson also teaches adults need to have the innocents and the honesty of children to give perfect praise to the LORD all the time not just Holy Week.
Matthew 21:12-17; Mark 11:15-19
Holy Monday is the day Jesus went into the temple and began to cast out those that sold and bought in the temple. Jesus overthrew the tables of the money changers, and the seats of those that sold doves.
Jesus said to them “It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.” (Matthew 21:13).
When the blind and the lame came to Jesus in the temple He healed them.
The chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that Jesus did, and outside the children were crying in the temple saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David;” (Matthew 21:15). The chief priests and scribes were very angry and displeased.
The chief priests and scribes asked Jesus if He heard that these children were saying. The response that Jesus gave them was to question if they had never read, “Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?” (Matthew 21:16).
Mark 11:18 tells us when the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people were astonished at his doctrine.
Jesus left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there.
This is one of the first times we really see Jesus super angry. When Jesus saw that the Temple of the LORD was being used wrongly He got mad. Rightfully so! Would you want to see people selling and buying things in your church? A money changer is like a banker. Would you like to see your church being used as a bank?
Jesus reminds us all that the church, His church is to be called the house of prayer. Men have made the church a den of thieves. The church is not a place for robbers, plunderers, freebooters, is like a speculator or investor or a brigands who are gangster or lawbreaker. These are all words for thieves.
Jesus did continue doing healings of the blind and the lame that came to Him. This did not make the chief priest and the scribes happy. Nor did it make them happy that the children praised Him.
Do you know what “Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise” found in Matthew 21:16 means? It means that those untaught, unskilled, children and even babies are the perfect ones to give praise. You see these people have not learned how to be fake and dishonest.
Adults need to have the innocents and the honesty of children to give perfect praise to the LORD all the time not just Holy Week.
