Moses and the Burning Bush

The lesson of Moses and the burning bush teaches that when the LORD God says He will help us, He will help us. We need to put our trust in God and know that He will be with us when we rely on Him during the good times and the hard times. Even when we don’t believe we can do something, with His help we can do anything.

Exodus 3:1-15

Moses was found in the river by the daughter of the Pharaoh and was adopted into the family of the Pharaoh. Moses lived in the splendid palace of Pharaoh and had the best of everything and the finest education. Yet he never forgot he was a Hebrew boy and not an Egyptian.

When Moses saw an Egyptian man knock one of his brothers to the ground he became angry. He killed the Egyptian man and hid his body in the sand. Moses ran away into the land of Midian.

He came to a small village and sat down by a well to rest. The daughters of Jethro came towards him to fill the water troughs for their flock. Just then there were other shepherds that had arrived with their sheep. Those shepherds told the daughter of Jethro to move so they could water their sheep first.

Moses, being a good man, told those other shepherds that was not fair and they would wait their turn. Then Moses drew water until all the sheep were satisfied. This pleased the seven daughters of Jethro.

When the girls went back to their father and told him what had happened Jethro told his daughter to go invite him home for dinner with them. They did as their father told them to do and invited Moses home with them.

Moses accepted the invitation and stayed with Jethro and took care of his sheep. Moses married one of his daughters named Zipporah. Once Moses was a proud prince in Egypt; now Moses had become a hard-working humble shepherd.

One day Moses was taking his sheep to Horeb, which is called “the mountain of God” which is near the edge of the desert when he saw an extraordinary thing. A bush was on fire. The bush was not burning up into ashes it was just burning.

Then Moses heard a voice coming from the burning bush calling his name.  Moses asked who it was that was calling his name. The voice said “Do not come any closer; take off your shoes from your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.”

The voice continued to say who He was: “I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” It was the voice of the LORD God. Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look upon the LORD God.

The LORD had seen the affliction of His people in Egypt and heard them crying for help. He had heard their cries because of their taskmasters and He knew their sorrows.  The LORD God had chosen Moses to be their leader to bring them out of that land. He will bring them up out of that land unto a good land, unto a land flowing with milk and honey.

The LORD God was going to send Moses to Pharaoh so he could bring the His people the children of Israel out of Egypt. Moses did not want to go back to Pharaoh because he was afraid. The LORD God reassured Moses that He would be there with him.

Moses wanted to know what he would say to the children of Israel, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, what is his name? What shall Moses say unto them?

The LORD GOD said unto Moses, “I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.” (Exodus 3:14-15)

Just like Moses whatever we do in life we need the guidance from the LORD God. Moses was chose to do great things. Moses was saved when he was a baby when other baby boys were being killed. He learned many things that he would need later to do the things the LORD God required him to do.

There is nothing that is too large or to hard when we are called by the LORD God. Moses was not a perfect man he was weak and made many mistakes, but Moses loved the LORD God. This did not make a difference he was chosen by the Great “I am.”

When the LORD God says He will help us, He will help us. We need to put our trust in God and know that He will be with us when we rely on Him during the good times and the hard times. Even when we don’t believe we can do something, with His help we can do anything.
