The Horse Gate

Horse Gate near the Temple area and north of the Water Gate. Near the Temple area and north of the water gate was the Horse Gate. “From above the horse gate repaired the priests, every one over against his house.” (Nehemiah 3: 28).  This gate led from the temple complex east down into the Kidron Valley.

Athaliah was the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, and the wife of Jehoram. She took over the rule of the southern Kingdom of Judah after the death of her husband and oldest son. Athaliah is referred to as, that wicked woman, who had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of the LORD and bestowed them upon Baalim. (Holstein. 2015). “So they laid hands on Athaliah; and when she was come to the entering of the Horse gate by the king’s house, they slew her there.” (2 Chronicles 23:15).

The LORD spoke to Jeremiah saying “If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD. Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the city shall be built to the LORD from the tower of Hananeel unto the gate of the corner. And the measuring line shall yet go forth over against it upon the hill Gareb, and shall compass about to Goath. And the whole valley of the dead bodies, and of the ashes, and all the fields unto the brook of Kidron, unto the corner of the horse gate toward the east, shall be holy unto the LORD; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more for ever. (Jeremiah 31:37-40).
