Old Missionary Baptists Associations

The Old Missionary Baptist Associations are considered Primitivistic (the belief that less technologically dependent cultures and ways of living are inherently better than more technologically dependent ones) sects of the Baptist church. They are known by different names such as Old Time Missionary Baptist and the Old Fashioned Missionary Baptist and are within the Landmark Missionary Baptists Movement which has rejected most progressive methods of life and worship.

The Old Missionary Baptist Associations are moderately Calvinistic, embracing general atonement, total depravity, and eternal security. They embrace the New Hampshire Confession of Faith which was drawn up by the Reverend John Newton Brown from New Hampshire in 1833 and accepted by the Baptist New Hampshire Convention.

The Old Missionary Baptist Associations embrace home and foreign mission work through direct church effort. They do reject the authority of a missionary board or conventions, and everything dealing with their organization is on the directed at the local level.

The Old Missionary Baptists Associations hold the End Times doctrine of a thousand year period of peace on earth that that will follow the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. They believe Jesus Christ established His church during His ministry on earth, and that it is always a local, visible assembly of scripturally baptized believers in covenant relationship to carry out the Great Commission of the Lord Jesus Christ. They believe each church is an independent, self-governing body. They believe no other ecclesiastical body may have authority over them. They believe Jesus Christ gave the Great Commission to the New Testament Churches only.

The Old Missionary Baptists Associations only have two divinely appointed offices in the church. The position of pastors and deacons are to be filled by qualified men. They believe in freedom of worship without interference from the government.

History

The Old Missionary Baptists Associations can trace their roots to the United Baptists when they chose to merge with either the Regular Baptists or the Separate Baptists. They were part of the Southern Baptist convention at one time, however some dropped out of the Southern Baptist convention in the last part of the 19th century.

The Old Missionary Baptists Association believed there was a conversion using the head, and not the heart. They are connected in fellowship with some of the United Baptist churches which have similar faith and practice.

Belief

They believe in the suffering and death of Jesus Christ and that Jesus was substitutionary for all mankind and is efficacious only to those who believe. They believe in the bodily resurrection and ascension of Christ and the bodily resurrection of His saints.

The Old Missionary Baptists Associations believe the Holy Spirit is the divine Administrator for Jesus Christ in His church. They believe the miraculous spiritual manifestation gifts were done away when the Bible was completed. They believe faith, hope and love are the vital spiritual gift of today. They believe the Holy Spirit convicts sinners, regenerates, seals, secures and indwells every believer.

The Old Missionary Baptists Associations believe sinners are saved through grace through faith in Jesus Christ. They believe all who trust Jesus Christ for salvation are eternally secure in Him and will not perish. They believe God considers believers as His children, and chastises the disobedient. They believe God rewards the obedient and punishes the disobedient.

The Old Missionary Baptists Associations believe in two ordinances. Baptism is the immersion of penitent believers in water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. They believe baptism should be administered by the authority of a New Testament church. They Lord’s Supper is a memorial ordinance and is restricted to the members of the church.

The Old Missionary Baptists Associations believe justification is a blessing which Christ secures to those who believe in Him. They believe justification includes the pardon of sin, and the promise of eternal life. They believe justification is not from any works of righteousness which someone does, but solely through faith in the Redeemer’s blood.

The Old Missionary Baptists Associations believe in the premillennial, personal, bodily return of Christ as the crowning event in the Gentile age. They believe this occurrence includes the resurrection of the righteous to eternal heaven, and the Millennium will be followed by the resurrection of the unrighteous unto eternal punishment in the lake of fire and that the righteous should enter into the heaven age.

The Old Missionary Baptists Associations believe satan is a fallen angel, the archenemy of God and of man. They believe satan to be an unholy god of this world. They believe his final destination is the eternal lake of fire.
