The Second Call of Jonah

There was a second time when the word of the LORD came to Jonah. Once again Jonah was told to go and preach to Nineveh. Jonah had learned his lesson and did go to Nineveh told the people that they must repent or they would be destroyed. We also are instructed to repent, forgive those who sin against us, and not to judge.

Jonah 3:1-10

And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying, Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I tell you.

So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days’ journey. And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

So the people of Nineveh believed the LORD God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water: But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto the LORD God: yea, let them turn everyone from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.

Who can tell if the LORD God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger that we perish not? And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and the LORD God regret the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did not do it.

What Can This Story Teach Us?

The LORD God once again told Jonah to go and preach to the people of Nineveh obedience to the people for their wickedness. Finally Jonah obeyed he told the people that they must repent or they would be destroyed. The people listened and believed. They were sorry for their sins and they changed and the LORD God forgave them.

Nineveh listened to the LORD and was sorry for their sins. They were sorry for their sins and they changed and the LORD God forgave them. If we confess our sins, our LORD is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9).

Jesus instructs us to if we forgive those who sin against us, the Heavenly Father will also forgive us. But if we do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will our Father forgive 0our trespasses. (Matthew 6:12-15).
Judge not, and you shall not be judged: condemn not, and you shall not be condemned: forgive, and you shall be forgiven: (Luke 6:37).
