The LORD God Calls Jonah

Jonah ran away. The LORD needed him to do something for him and he ran away. There was no argument, Jonah just rose up to flee. Many Christian of today runs away when the LORD calls them. They would rather face the unknown that to do what the LORD needed.

Jonah 1:1-3

Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa.

Jonah found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

What Can This Story Teach Us?

Jonah was called by the Lord and he ran from Him. What will you do when you are called by the Lord?

Jonah was instructed to arise and go to Nineveh, that great city. Jonah was to cry against the wickedness they were doing.

Nineveh, that great city. Nineveh was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Assyria; located on the east bank of the Tigris River, 550 miles from its mouth and 250 miles (400 km) north of Babylon.

Jonah ran away. The LORD needed him to do something for him and he ran away. There was no argument, Jonah just rose up to flee. Many Christian of today runs away when the LORD calls them. They would rather face the unknown that to do what the LORD needed.

Serving the Lord is difficult, but we often make it harder than it needs to be. Those who do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, oppression, and anguish, upon every soul of man that does evil. But glory, honor, and peace, to every man that works good. (Romans 2:8-9).

Jesus called His disciples and some day you may be called to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. Jesus asked His disciples to abandon their fishing trade and become fishers of men. They would not lead a quiet life of prayer but a life of following Jesus. That is exactly what we must do. Learn and follow Jesus.
