Apples
The Bible has much to say about Apples. The apple is one of the most famous of the food mentioned in the Bible. The apple has been labeled as the “forbidden fruit.” It was tradition that has labeled the apple as the fruit Adam and Eve was tempted with by the serpent.
“Apple of the eye” is a symbolic expression for a very valuable person in scriptural and it is representative as the loving care for us by the LORD God.
There are many references to the apple in the Bible. The Song of Solomon gives us the most reflection of the Apple tree. The apple tree is among the trees of the wood. You can sit down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. (Song of Solomon 2:3). The Apples is referred to as comfort in the case of love sickness. (Song of Solomon 2:5). When the vine is dried up, and the fig tree languishes or grows feeble the apple tree in the field are withered becomes dried because the joy is withered away from the sons of men. (Joel 1:12). “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver. This is saying that these words come from a heart that is pure. The apples are desired and gold symbolizes the purity of the LORD. Silver symbolized redemption. (Leviticus 5:15-16, 1 Peter 1:18-20).
These “words fitly spoken” mean that these words come from a pure heart. Apples are fruit much desired and gold has to do symbolically with the purity of God. We see, here, the fruit of these lips come from a heart filled with the pureness of God. These “pictures of silver” are beautiful in symbolism, as well. Silver symbolizes redemption. When we see a person who speaks beautiful Godly words, we see a person we know has been redeemed. (Proverbs 25:11). The tradition of the temptation of Adam and Eve has always been depicted as an apple; however it is tradition. It probably is not an apple tree. There is no mention of what the fruit tree of the knowledge of good and evil was in the Bible. (MacKay, 1950, p. 70).
“You are the apple of my eye” This Biblical saying speaks not just of human love, but of a love that can heal our deepest hurts and fulfill our deepest longings. It is the love of the LORD God. This is a reference that this person has great value to us. The “apple of God’s eye” also means there shows great value to the LORD. Finally, to be the “apple” of God’s eye, is to value others as he does you. Through the prophet Zechariah the LORD says these words: “The one who touches you touches the apple of my eye” (Zechariah. 2:8). The LORD is saying we are the apple of His eye and anyone who tries to injure, threatens or harm us, His children will have to answer to Him.
Deuteronomy 32: 9-11 Moses describes how the LORD God sustained and cared for his people. “He sustained him in a desert land, in a howling wilderness was he shielded him as the apple of his eye.” Therefore, to be “the apple” of God’s eye is to experience love and protection of the LORD God. Knowing that the LORD God loves his people, David asks the LORD to show His marvelous loving-kindness. David asked to be kept as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of your wings, from the wicked that oppress me, from my deadly enemies, who compass me about. (Psalm 17:7-9).
We are instructed, as sons of the LORD, keep His words, and lay up His commandments with you. We are instructed to keep His commandments, and live; and His law as the apple of your eye. Bind them upon your fingers, write them upon the table of your heart. We are instructed to know wisdom, and understand because it is wisdom and understanding keeps you from the strange woman, from the stranger with flatters with her words. (Proverb 7:1-3).
