Leeks Vegetables

It is reflective to as a symbol of more abundant life the Children of Israelites experienced in Egypt. They have been compared to onion. Leeks were widely used in both Palestine and Egypt. Leeks were used as a seasoning for meats and used in soups in the time of the Romans.

The leeks are fondly remembered as being freely eaten in Egypt before the Exodus. (Numbers 11:5). It is reflective to as a symbol of more abundant life the Children of Israelites experienced in Egypt.

The leeks have been compared to the onion. The bulb of the leek differs from that of the onion and garlic in being slender, cylindrical, and more than 6 inches in length. The flavor resembles that of the onion but is more pungent and powerful. The leaves can be eaten as a relish. Leeks are cooked in soups and used as a seasoning for meats. The leek is still a favorite food of the Jews and is common to the Egyptian diet. (Elwell.1988.p.1719). Leeks were widely used in both Palestine and Egypt. According to Pliny the Eder the leeks have been used to stop nose bleeds when the nostrils are plugged with the plant. The leaves are also use topically for the cure of pimples, burns and ulcers. The juice was used in cases for chronic cough, and of affections of the chest and lungs. (Pliny the Elder. 1855,p. 4223).
