Dove -Fowl

A dove was used to see if the waters were subsided from off the face of the ground. The dove was declared a pure bird by the Law of Moses. The dove was used for a sin-offering. The priests were permitted to sale doves in the courts of the temple. The image of the dove was used for the Holy Spirit descending on Jesus at his baptism.

Dove in general

Dove and pigeon are used in Scripture and are used interchangeably Noah sent out a dove from the ark to see if the waters were subsided from off the face of the ground. The dove came back to Noah on the ark in the evening; and, carried in her mouth was an olive leaf pluck off the ground. Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth. (Genesis 8:8-12).

Dove used in offerings

The dove could be for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement. (Leviticus 5:7; 12:8).

There was a great famine in Samaria: an ass’s head was sold for fourscore pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a cab of dove’s dung for five pieces of silver. (2 Kings 6:25).

Dove used as representation

The dove was used as a representation of pain, sorrow and mourning. When David was pained and the terrors of death are fallen upon him and fearfulness and trembling are come upon him, and horror had overwhelmed him he had longed for wings like a dove then he would fly away, and be at rest. (Psalms 55:4-6). Isaiah did mourn as a dove: his eyes fail with looking upward. Isaiah pleaded “O LORD, I am oppressed; undertake for me.”(Isaiah 38:14).

The Song of Solomon 2:14 refers to the dove as being in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, let me see thy countenance, let me hear your voice; for sweet is your voice, and your countenance is comely. Then again in the Song of Solomon 5:2 Solomon refers to the dove as being his love undefiled. The Song of Solomon 6:9 gives another illustration of the dove when it is referred to as “My dove, my undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her; yea, the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.”

Jeremiah 48:28 tells us the dove makes her nest in the sides of the rocks mouth. There is reference of doves as being silly. (Hosea 7:11).

The Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighted upon Jesus at His baptism when he had come straightway out of the water. (Matthew 3:16). Mark 1:10 tells us that John saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Jesus. Luke 3:22 reports the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon Jesus, and a voice came from heaven, which said, “Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.”
Jesus tells His disciples to be harmless as doves. (Matthew 10:16).
