Elisha Feeds One Hundred Men

For thus says the LORD: “They shall eat and have some left over”: God promised not only to provide, but to provide beyond the immediate need. Elisha trusted the promise of God, acted upon it, and saw the promise miraculously fulfilled. When we look at our lives we also can see the miraculously wonderful things He is accomplishing in our lives.
2 Kings 4:42–44; Matthew 14: 10-21

There came a man from Baalshalisha (a place near Gilgal), and brought the man of God bread of the first fruits, twenty loaves of barley, and full ears of corn in the husk thereof. And he said, Give unto the people that they may eat.

And his servant ask what he should set an hundred men? He said again, Give the people that they may eat: for thus said the LORD, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof.
So the servant set it before them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word of the LORD.

What Can This Story Teach Us?

A man from BaalShalisha brought some food for the prophet Elisha. The LORD multiplied it for 100 men and had some left over, just as He predicted.

Bread of the first fruits, twenty loaves of barley bread: “These had been brought to Elisha as first fruits (2 Kings 4:42). Customarily these portions were reserved for the LORD God (Leviticus 23:20) and the Levitical priests (Numbers 18:13; Deuteronomy 18:4-5).

This miracles of feeding one hundred men is very similar to the feeding of the multitudes with only five loaves of bread and two fishes. Once everyone had eaten there were twelve baskets full of leftover bread and fish.

There were about five thousand men, beside women and children that had been feed that day with five loaves of bread and two small fish. This was a miracle from the LORD. When the men saw how he had fed all of the people, they said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world!” (Matthew 14: 10-21)

It is not unusual for the LORD to use something small to accomplish something very big. We cannot do anything great by ourselves. It takes the power of the LORD to complete the tasks He has in store for each of us. We just have to listen and obey the Word of God.

We are given everything we can ever need by the LORD God. Just like the multitude who gathered to hear Jesus preach and teach and heal the sick trusted and had faith that Jesus would take care of all their needs we also need to have faith and trust that Jesus will take care of all our needs.
