What the Bible Says about Lying to the LORD

The Holy Spirit warns us that in the later times there are those who will fall away and become faithless and heed or give themselves over to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. Lying is an abomination to the LORD and we should avoid succumbing to lying.
1 Timothy 4:1-2

The Bible has a great deal to say about lying and what it means to speak lies. There are six things the LORD hates and is an abomination to Him. The first is a proud or lofty look. The second is a lying tongue. Then are hands that shed innocent blood. Then a heart that devises wick plans. Feet that make haste to run to evil. Next a false witness who speaks out lies. Last is one is one who sows discord among brothers. (Proverbs 6:16-19). Proverbs 12:22 also reminds us: “Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.”

This world is a world of lies; it is not meant for the truthful. The speediest and guaranteed way to succeed in this world is to sin. The psalmist says: “Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.” (Psalm 73:12). The Psalms and Proverbs are a wealth of information regarding lying and liars. Psalms 31:18, “Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.” Their tongue are mindful of mischiefs or destruction, calamity like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. They love evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. They love all devouring words that leads to ruin. (Psalms 52:2-4). The wicked are estranged or loathsome from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies. (Psalms 58:3). A righteous man hates lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame and cause embarrassment. (Proverbs 13:5). Proverbs 14:5 reminds us that a faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies. A true witness delivers souls: but a deceitful witness speaks lies. (Proverbs 14:25). A wicked doer gives heed to false lips; and a liar gives ear to a naughty tongue. A naughty tongue is engulfing ruin, destruction, calamity language. (Proverbs 17:4). A false witness shall not be unpunished, and those that speaks lies shall not escape. A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall perish. The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar. (Proverbs 19:5, 9, 22). A lying tongue hates those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth works ruin. (Proverbs 26:28). We shall rejoice in the LORD God. Everyone that takes an oath by the LORD shall be praised. But the mouth of those that speak lies shall be stopped. (Psalm 63:11).

We are to avoid speaking vanity or nothingness and speaking lies because the LORD God will be against you. The LORD’s hand shall be upon the prophets that see vanity or emptiness, and that divine lies: they shall not be in the assembly of the people of the LORD, neither shall they be written in the writing of the house of Israel, neither shall they enter into the land of Israel; and they shall know that I am the Lord GOD. (Ezekiel 13:8-9).

Lies become sin when there is any indication of selfishness. Acts 5:1-9 gives us a perfect example. Ananias and Sapphira was a married couple that sold a piece of their property. They kept a portion of the money back for themselves but they wanted to look good in front of others, so they lied and said they were giving all of the profit to the church. Peter says to Ananias, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart?” Peter tells him he is not lying to men, but unto the LORD God. When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. Men in the church carried him out and buried him. Later on Sapphira comes into the church knowing nothing about what happened to her husband. Then after an interval of about three hours the wife of Ananias wife came in, not knowing what had happened. And Peter said to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.” And she said, “Yes, for so much.” But Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” Immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. Their lies were built around a false pretense to look like generous, giving people to the rest of the church. The LORD God does not accept this lying behavior.

We know that whosever is born of the LORD God does not sin, but he that is begotten of the LOD God keeps himself, and that wicked one does not touch him. We know that we are of the LORD God, and the whole world lies in wickedness. And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. (1John 5:18-20).

The Holy Spirit speaks expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy (that is in insincerity or falseness); having their conscience (which is the soul as distinguishing between what is morally good and bad, prompting to do the former and shun the latter, commending one, condemning the other) seared with a hot iron (that is whose souls are branded with the marks of sin. (1 Timothy 4:1-2).

Jesus also warns us in Matthew 7:15 to beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Then again when Jesus was asked by His disciples what shall be the sign of the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and of the end of the world? Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. Many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. Jesus warns there shall be many false prophets that shall rise, and shall deceive many. Because iniquity or immorality and wickedness shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened. Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false christ’s, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Jesus has told us this before it happens so when they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. (Matthew 24:1-31).

Those who denies that Jesus is the Christ is a liar. He is antichrist that denies the Father and the Son. (1 John 2:22). 1 John 4:20 asks a great question of us all “If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?”

The Revelation 21:7-8 give both a warning and hope for all of us. He that overcomes shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Blessed are those that do His commandments that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. Those who are not going to enter through the gates into the city are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loves and makes a lie. (Revelation 22:14-15).

Let us not forget the eighth Commandment that tells us we shall not bear false witness against our neighbor. (Exodus 20:16).
