Queen of Sheba and Solomon
The queen of Sheba was a very wealthy Queen from probably the South Arabian kingdom of Saba. Ancient Saba is what is now to modern Yemen. She knew the fame of King Solomon and she wanted to see for herself if he really was what people said. This lesson teaches us that there are always people who are watching us. Are we conducting ourselves according to what we profess?
1 King 10:1-13, 2 Chronicles 9:1-9.
When the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to try him with hard questions. She wanted to see if the reputation of King Solomon was honest.
She came to Jerusalem with a very great train, with camels that bare spices, and very much gold, and precious stones: and when she was come to Solomon, she spoke with him of all that was in her heart.Solomon answered all her questions: there was not anything hid from the king. King Solomon told the queen of Sheba whatever she wanted to know.
When the queen of Sheba had seen all Solomon’s wisdom, and the house that he had built, and the food that was on his table, and the situation of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their apparel, and his cupbearers, and his ascent by which he went up unto the house of the LORD; there was no more questions in her.
The queen of Sheba said to the king, It was a true report that I heard in mine own land of your acts and of your wisdom.
She told the King that she could not believe the reports in words; she had to come and see with her own eyes. She discovered that the half was not told me: the wisdom and prosperity exceeded the fame which she had heard.Your men are happy, and your servants who stand continually before the King and that hear the wisdom of King Solomon.
The queen of Sheba also said; Blessed be the LORD thy God, which delighted in thee, to set thee on the throne of Israel: because the LORD loved Israel for ever, therefore made he thee king, to do judgment and justice.
The queen of Sheba gave the king an hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices very great store, and precious stones: there came no more such abundance of spices as these which the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon.
She also gave the navy of Hiram, that brought gold from Ophir, brought in from Ophir great plenty of almug trees, and precious stones. Ophir was a land or city in southern Arabia in Solomonís trade route where gold evidently was traded for goods
The king made of the almug trees pillars for the house of the LORD, and for the kingís house, harps also and psalteries for singers: there came no such almug trees, nor were seen unto this day.
And King Solomon gave unto the queen of Sheba all her desire, whatsoever she asked, beside that which Solomon gave her of his royal bounty. So she turned and went to her own country, she and her servants.
What Can This Story Teach Us?
The queen of Sheba had heard greatness about the King of Solomon. She didn’t believe it so she found out for herself if the information was true. There are two lessons that come out of the queen of Sheba. 1. Don’t believe everything you are told about someone. Always check out the information and make sure it is true.
2. This lesson also teaches us that there are always people who are watching us. We need to be sure our conduct is according to what we declare or profess we are.
We must always remember if we acknowledge we are followers of Jesus then our actions must also make that statement. We must follow what He expects us to be and behave in a manner that would be acceptable to Jesus.
“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12).
