Solomon the Wise
King Solomon was very young when he became the King. He prayed for wisdom and this was put to the test. This Bible lesson is about King Solomon’s most famous example of his wisdom. When you are faced with anything you do not understand then take it to the Lord in prayer. We can have wisdom if we pray for it also. 1 Kings 3:16-28.
There were two women that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him. This means that these two women belonged to a cult of prostitutes and was unfaithful to the LORD God.
These two women lived in the same hours and one of them had a baby. The third day after the baby was born the other woman had a baby also but his one baby died in the night.The one woman claimed at the other woman rose at midnight and took her son from beside her and put the dead baby in its place.
The two women argued about which baby belonged to them. When King Solomon heard their argument he said to bring him a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. King Solomon said to divide the living child in two and give half to the one, and half to the other woman.
The woman whose gave birth to the living baby said unto King Solomon, “O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it.î But the other woman said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.” (1 King 3:26).
The wise King Solomon said to give the first woman the living baby, and in no way slay it, he recognized the mother one who wanted to save the baby this was the true mother.
And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.
What Can This Story Teach Us?
How did King Solomon know what to do in this hard situation? He had prayed to the LORD God for wisdom. Wisdom is understanding, knowledge and perception and it all comes for the LORD.
King Solomon asked the LORD for wisdom and he listened and he obeyed the Word of the LORD. King Solomon reasoned that no normal mother would want to have her baby divided with a sword.
The reason for this lesson is that last verse: “All of Israel heard the judgment that the King had judged. They had great awe for the King; for they saw that the wisdom of God was within him to do justice.” (1 King 3:28).
When you are faced with anything you do not understand then take it to the Lord in prayer. And listen with your ears unto the wisdom from your prayer, and then apply your heart to understanding. (Proverbs 2:2-10).
King Solomon wrote the book of Proverbs and many of his writings were about wisdom. Proverbs 3:13 tells us “Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.” Did you know that Jesus also was filled with wisdom and the grace of God was upon Him? (Luke 2:40, 52).
Ephesians 1:17-18 could be a beautiful prayer in times of confusion when you do not know which way to turn “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints.”
