Jesus Catches a Fish With a Coin in its Mouth:
This is a lesson about obedience and knowing the Divine power of Jesus. The tax collectors came to Peter and asked if Jesus paid the Temple tax. Jesus told Peter to “Go to the sea and cast a hook, take the first fish that comes up, and when you open his mouth, you will find a coin, take that and give it to them for you and Me.”
Matthew 17:24-27
Jesus and His disciples came to Capernaum. The tax collectors came to Peter and ask if his master, Jesus, paid tribute or taxes. They were speaking of the temple tax.
Peter answered yes. When he came into the house, Jesus stopped him, and asks Simon Peter what he thought about of whom the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? Do they take taxes from their own children or of strangers? Peter said unto Jesus, of strangers. Jesus said unto Peter, and then are the children free.
Jesus then said that so they should not offend them, Peter was go to the sea, and cast a hook, and take up the fist that first comes up. When you open his mouth, you shall find a piece of money. Then take the money and give unto the take collectors for Jesus and Peter.
What Can Be Learned From This Lesson?
So not to offend the tax collector Jesus told Peter to go catch the first fish and take the piece of money in its mouth and pay the tax collectors. It was the exact amount that was needed for the tribute. This shows the Divine power of Jesus.
It should be noted that the miracles of the coin in the mouth of the fish had to be follow exactly the way Jesus had instructed Peter to do. If Peter had not followed the instruction the miracle would not have happened. It was the obedience of Peter that brought about the miracle.
When we are being told to do something by our parents or teachers we know we must obey or pay the consequences. We must always be obedient to the teaching of Jesus as well.
Jesus didn’t have to pay tribute because He was not from this world as we can see from John 18:36 when Jesus told us His kingdom is not of this world.
“If the world hates you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.” (John 15:18-19).
