Jesus Walks on Water
This is a lesson about having faith in Jesus. It took place right after the feeding the 5000, Jesus made His disciples get into a boat and go ahead to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus went up to the mountain to pray. Jesus prayed often and we also should pray often. We should keep our eyes and heart on Jesus. As long as we keep our eyes on Jesus we can do anything.
Matthew 14:22-33; Mark 6:45-52
Jesus had feed five thousand men, women and children. Immediately Jesus urged the disciples to get into a ship and to go before Him unto the other side of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus was going to send the multitude away.
Once Jesus had sent the multitudes away, Jesus went up into a mountain away from everyone and prayed until evening came.
The ship the disciples were on was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves what were very strong and hostile. It was the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto the disciples, walking on the sea.
The fourth watch was between 3 am and 6am. The Romans divided up their watches using the period from sunrise to sun set. There were four watches in a twelve hour period. The sixth hour began at midday.
First watch – Sunset To 9 P. M.
Second Watch – 9 P. M. To Midnight
Third Watch – Midnight To 3 A. M.
Fourth Watch – 3 A. M. To Sunrise
When the disciples saw Jesus walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spoke unto them, saying, “Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.”
Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be you, bid, or tell me come unto you on the water. Jesus said “Come.”
When Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, “Lord, save me.”
Immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, “O you of little faith, wherefore did you doubt?”
When they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. Then those that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, “Of a truth you art the Son of God.”
What Can Be Learned From This Lesson?
When Peter saw Jesus walking on the water he told Jesus to command him to “Come.” Peter had faith to walk on the water in this boisterous wind as long as his eyes were on Jesus. Once he stopped focusing of Jesus he started to sink and lost faith.
What a wonderful example of what can happen to us when we take our eyes off Jesus. This can happen so fast one minute we are going through our daily routes then all of a sudden there is chaos and turmoil in our life. Just like a huge blast of wind.
This boisterous wind can certainly test our faith. As long as we keep our eyes on Jesus we can do anything. Once we take our eyes off of Him then we are in control of our life not Jesus. That is when we become afraid; and beginning to sink. Jesus promises to always be with us.
We are instructed to Watch and pray, that you do not enter into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. (Matthew 26:41).
