The Importance of Passover Celebration
We are instructed to seal this night of Passover in our hearts and forever remember the Power and the Glory and the Majesty of the LORD GOD. There is a miracle of Passover. We, as the adopted family of the LORD GOD, (through the blood of Jesus Christ) get to partake of the promises and privileges of the LORD God and in His miracles.
Exodus 1-15
Passover is the oldest and most important of the Jewish religious festivals. It was the LORD God who commemorated the deliverance of the Children of Israel from slavery in Egypt and it was the creation of the Israelite as His people. The term Passover refers to the tenth and final plague the LORD God brought upon the Egyptians to persuade Pharaoh to let His people go, the death of all the firstborn of Egypt. The children of Israel were instructed to place the blood of a lamb on the door posts of their homes, so when the angel of death came over their homes they would be “pass over”.
The first question we might ask is how did things get so bad so fast? The children of Israel had spent many decades in slavery under the Pharaohs of Egypt. The Israelites were exposed to doing backbreaking labor and their distressed was heard by the LORD God. Moses and Aaron were chosen to send a message to Pharaoh to say: “And Moses and Aaron came in unto Pharaoh, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews, How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before me? let my people go, that they may serve me.” (Exodus 10:3).
It took Ten Plagues to make the Pharaoh listen to the LORD God.
1. Blood – All the waters of Egypt are turned to blood. All the fish die and the river stank and the Egyptians could not drink of the water of the river, water both in vessels of wood and in vessels of stone becomes unusable. Exodus 7:19-21
2. Frogs – Hordes of frogs swarm the land of Egypt.
3. Gnats or Lice – Masses of gnats or lice invade Egyptian homes and plague the Egyptian people.
4. The Plague of flies. If you do not let my people go, I will send swarms of flies on you and your officials, on your people and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians will be full of flies, and even the ground where they are. . Dense swarms of flies poured into Pharaoh’s palace and into the houses of his officials, and throughout Egypt the land was ruined by the flies.
5. Pestilence – Egyptian livestock is struck down with disease. the LORD will bring a terrible plague on your livestock in the field—on your horses and donkeys and camels and on your cattle and sheep and goats.
6. Boils – The Egyptian people are plagued by painful boils that cover their bodies.
7. Hail – Severe weather destroys Egyptian crops and beats down upon them.
8. Locusts into the coast: the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt, and rested in all the coasts of Egypt: very grievous were they. they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they did eat every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left: and there remained not any green thing in the trees, or in the herbs of the field, through all the land of Egypt. Exodus 10:12-15
9. Darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt. there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days no one could see each other no one left their place: Exodus 10:21-23
10. The last plague: Killing of the first born. About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt: And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts. And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there was none like it, nor shall be like it any more. But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast: that ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel. Exodus 11:4-7
The reason why the LORD God sent these ten pledges was so we His followers would never forget his might, power and glory and to know the LORD. “I might shew these my signs before him: And that thou mayest tell in the ears of thy son, and of thy son’s son, what things I have wrought in Egypt, and my signs which I have done among them; that ye may know how that I am the LORD. Exodus 10:1-2
Throughout history there have been many rulers who have refused to humble (be bowed down) themselves before the LORD God. These nations have been punished or even destroyed because they have refused to humble themselves, or bow down before the LORD God. Just like in the time of Miriam we have the opportunity to recall that miraculous display of the Power and Glory of the LORD GOD. Just like the Israelites were led out of the bondage of slavery as adopted children we also have been led out of the bonds of the slavery of sin and darkness. Just like the Israelites we are instructed to tell our sons and daughter about what the LORD GOD did in the land of Egypt. Let us never forget.
