Moses Goes to Egypt
There is so much to learn about Moses and how he obeyed the LORD God and goes to Egypt. Moses can help us learn to trust and have faith in the LORD God. This is also a good example of the tolerance and patience that the LORD God has for His people. Exodus 3:16-25, Exodus 4:1- 31
Moses spoke to the LORD God from a burning bush and was told to go to Egypt to speak to the Children of Israel. Moses was to let them know that He will bring them out of the affliction of Egypt into a land flowing with milk and honey. This means the abundance of the land and the land would be all they would want.
Moses was told that he had to go to the king of Egypt and tell him the LORD God of the Hebrews has met with them and now he was to let the people go so they could take a three day journey into the wilderness so they could sacrifice to the LORD God. The LORD God was sure that the king of Egypt would not let them go.
The LORD God told Moses that He would stretch out His hand and smite Egypt and then the king of Egypt or Pharaoh would let His people go. So Moses knows exactly what was going to happen. It was easy to see that the LORD God was in charge of all of what was about to happen. Moses was used only as the tool.
Not only was the Children of Israel going to leave Egypt they would not go empty handed. They would find favor in the sight of the Egyptians and all the Hebrew women would barrow their neighbor’s jewels of silver, and gold and clothes.
Moses was afraid that the people would not believe him and they would not do as he told them to do. He did not think they would not believe that the LORD had appeared to him. Moses required the LORD to give a sign of His power.
Moses was told to take his rod and throw it on the ground and it became a snake. Then Moses was told to take the snake by the tail and it became the rod in his hand. Next the LORD told Moses to put his hand in his shirt. Moses did as he was told and put his hand in his shirt and when he pulled his hand out again it was leprous. Leprosy was a really bad skin disease that would disfigure the bones as well. Then the LORD told Moses to put his hand back in his shirt again and this time when Moses pulled his hands out his hand was normal.
The LORD didn’t stop there He had covered all bases. If the Children of Israel did not believe the first two signs and would not listen to Moses there was one more sign. Moses should take water from the river and pour it on the dry land. When Moses pours the water out it would become blood upon the dry land.
You would think that would be the end of the conversation between Moses and the LORD but it wasn’t. Moses told The LORD that he was not a very good speaker so Moses asked if his brother Aaron could be the one who does the speaking. If this does tell you that the LORD is a patient LORD then you had better think about it. The LORD would put the words in the mouth of Aaron and be the spokesman. Moses would do the signs of the LORD.
Moses went to his father in law, Jethro, and asked to go back to Egypt to see if they were alive or dead. The LORD told Moses it was okay to return back to Egypt because all the men that tried to kill him were now dead. So Moses took his wife and sons and returned to the land of Egypt. This time Moses carried the rod of God in his hand. This meant that Moses was going back to Egypt on a mission of the LORD God. Moses was the tool that the LORD was going to use.
The LORD reminded Moses what he was to say to Pharaoh and what he was to perform. Moses was to say to Pharaoh “Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, even my firstborn: And I say unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me: and if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay thy son, even thy firstborn.”
Together Aaron and Moses went to the elders of the children of Israel. Aaron spoke all the words which the LORD had him speak. Moses did all the signs in the LORD had him do. And the people believed: and when they heard that the LORD had visited the children of Israel, and that He had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped.
What Can This Story Teach You?
Many times in the lives of people the need to be hit over the head to hear the voice of the Lord. Just like the Pharaoh would not listen to the LORD many people do not listen to the LORD. We need to always listen and obey the voice of the LORD and do what we are told to do.
We need to always remember that the LORD God is more than a name and more than all smiles and softness. Sometimes the LORD God gets mad and then His power is known. We should never forget the power and majesty of the LORD God.
3 Moses Goes to EgyptMany times in our lives we, like Moses, might be asked to the tool for the LORD. We need to be ready and willing to trust in the LORD and have the faith that He will be in the center of everything.
No matter how many times Moses told the LORD he couldn’t do what he was being asked to do the LORD provided a solution to Moses. That is important to us because we also make lots of excuses why we cannot do what we are being ask to do. It is easy to see that the LORD offered all kinds of solutions for Moses. He does the same for you and me. All we have to do is be obedient and trusting of the LORD and He is always there with us.
