Who was John the Baptist?

John the Baptist is important for children to learn about because his message was to tell the people they are not living the way they should. He said to “Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Matthew 3:1-12

The father and mother of John the Baptist were Zechariah and Elizabeth. Elizabeth and the mother of Jesus, Mary, were cousins. John was taught about the Lord God as a child. An angel had visited Zechariah while he was in the Temple of the Lord and told him that they would have a son who would important to God because he would tell everyone of the coming of the Messiah.

John grew up to be a good man. John the Baptist, preached in the wilderness of Judaea and Jerusalem and all around Jordan. He was clothed with camel’s hair and he ate locusts and wild honey.

He went through all the country to preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. (Mark 1:4). John baptized the crowds of people who came to confess their sins in the Jordan River.

The whole purpose of John the Baptist was to prepare the people that Jesus was mightier than he was more worthy than he was. He told the people he baptized with water but Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit.

John the Baptist taught the people to take care of one another and to share their goods with others. “If anyone has two coats, then give one of them to someone else who has none.”

What can we learn from John the Baptist?

John the Baptist was meant to prepare the way for Jesus and to be a witness for Him. John was chosen by the Lord God to help build His Kingdom. He did this by helping people know more about Jesus.

We also have been chosen to do things for the Lord God when we get older. Just like John the Baptist understood the importance of people to believe Jesus was the Messiah or our Savior; we also need to understand that Jesus came into this world to save us from our sins. It is our duty to learn as much as we can about what Jesus wants us to do and how He wants us to live our lives for Him.
