Mitrophan), Midwestern (Metr. Christopher RIP 2010), and Western (Bp. Maxim) United States and the Diocese of Canada (Bp. Georgije).
A seminary, the St. Sava Serbian Orthodox School of Theology is located at the St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Monastery in Libertyville, Illinois.
History
It was in California and Louisiana where the first Orthodox Serbian immigrants arrived in mid nineteenth century. They joined in the founding of some of the first Orthodox parishes in the United States. Ethnic Serbs arrived in the nineteenth century and early twentieth. Established in Jackson, California was the first Serbian Orthodox parish in 1892 by Archimandrite Sebastian Dabovich. He was the first Orthodox priest who was born in the United States.
Disorder came to the American diocese in 1941 during World War II. There it was evident the size of the North American diocese prevented the ruling bishop from having close association with the parishes on the outskirts. The Holy Assembly of Bishops, in 1963, and at the request of the diocesan bishop, Bp. Dionisije, created three new dioceses and elected bishops to rule the diocese. This action resulted in a split among the Serbian Orthodox in America.
