Fitches or Spelt Grain

Fitches/Spelt is a leguminous plants mentioned by Isaiah and Ezekiel. The plow man in Isaiah is instructed on how to thresh fitches. Ezekiel also is instructed how to make a bread that can be eaten for three hundred and ninety days.

Isaiah speaks that the plowman makes it plain that he does cast or scatters, fitches as well as scatter the cummin, and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and the rie in their place. Because his God instructs him to discretion, and does teach him. The fitches are not threshed with a threshing instrument but the fitches are beaten out with a staff. (Isaiah 28:24-27).

Ezekiel was commanded by the LORD to take wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet, and fitches and put them in one vessel, and make bread according to the three hundred and ninety days he shall eat of this. (Ezekiel 4:9)

Fitch has definite medicinal properties. The healing properties goes back Emperor Augustus was cured by its action. According to Pliny the Elder if fitch is sown in the month of March it is injurious to oxen. When it is sown in autumn it can produce head-ache. When it is planted in the beginning of sprint it has no bad effects and is productive. (Pliny the Elder, 1855. 4051).
