Elisha Succeeds Elijah

Elisha was chosen to succeed Elijah by the LORD. He must have been scared when Elijah was taken up into heaven and he realized the mantle now fell on him. Just like Elisha was chosen by Elijah, and the disciples were chosen by Jesus we also are chosen to be followers of Jesus. We are being trained right now to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ our Lord. 2 Kings 2:13-18.

Elisha took up the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of the Jordan. He took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, where is the LORD God of Elijah? When he also had struck the waters, they parted: and Elisha went over.

When the sons of the prophets who were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, the spirit of Elijah does rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.

They said unto him, they had servant’s fifty strong men. The sons of the prophets wanted Elisha to go to help find his master, Elijah. They were afraid the Spirit of the LORD had taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley. Elisha told them they would not send the men to go look.

When they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, Send. They sent therefore fifty men; and they looked three days, but did not find Elijah. When they returned back to Jericho, where Elisha tarried he reminded them that they should not go.

What Can This Story Teach Us?

Elisha was the son of Shaphat, who was in the field plowing when Elijah saw him and chose him to be his disciple. Elijah passed by Elisha and threw his mantle over him. (1 Kings 19:19-21).

Elisha had been training under Elijah for 10 years. He witnessed the power of the LORD and how he delivered His people and rejected the worshippers of idols. Elijah had been faithful to the LORD.

Now it was time for Elisha to take over and walk according to the Will of the LORD. The king of Judah was Jehoshaphat and the Ahazaiah son of Ahab reigned over Israel and he worshipped idols and did evil in the eyes of the Lord. The LORD knew it would be hard for Elisha.

Elisha knew he had been chosen to succeed Elijah by the LORD. He must have been scared when Elijah was taken up into heaven and he realized the mantle now fell on him. Because of his training he knew he would follow in the footsteps of Elijah.

We have to know that when we are chosen by the Lord we will be prepared according to His will. We do not get thrown into any situation without the Lord there to hold our hands. You see all things are possible with the Lord.

“The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.” (Luke 18:27).
Just like Elisha was chosen by Elijah, and the disciples were chosen by Jesus we also are chosen to be followers of Jesus. We are being trained right now to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ our Lord.
