Elijah Revives the Widow’s Son

The lesson of Elijah and the widow’s son helps us to better understand that faith comes by hearing the Word of God. This woman didn’t know that the LORD is a loving LORD. Because of the reviving of her son she knew that Elijah was a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in his mouth is truth. 1 Kings 17:17-24.

The son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so bad, that there was no breath left in him. The woman asks Elijah, the man of God, if he had come to call her sin to remembrance, and to slay her son.

Elijah told the woman to give him her son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.

Elijah cried unto the LORD, and said, “O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?”

Elijah stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, “O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again.” And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and Elijah said; “See your son lived.”

And the woman said to Elijah, “Now by this I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is truth.”

What Can This Story Teach Us?

This is a story of faith. Elijah was staying with the widow and her household while there was a drought in the land. Remember the LORD had commanded a widow woman to sustain Elijah. She was obedient and faithful to the LORD.

The widow woman was being obedient to the LORD and taking care of Elijah when her son had gotten sick and died. She didn’t blame Elijah or the LORD she though it was a punishment because of her sins. This woman didn’t know that the LORD is a loving LORD and would not be punished her by taking her son.

And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. It was then that the widow knew that Elijah was a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is truth.

It is the same with us when we receive the Word of the LORD and believe. We need to recognize that it is the Word of the LORD not the word of man. When we believe the person who is delivering the Word is speaking the truth from the Word of the LORD and it is the truth. Romans 10:17 tells us; “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Today, we find ourselves in a very desperate situation: lost in sin. It is only through Jesus that we can find the salvation that we need for eternal life.
