Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son
The miracle of Jesus raising the widow’s son holds many lessons for us to learn. We see the compassion Jesus has for the widow. Jesus has love and compassion for us as well. We see Jesus has the authority over death. We learn to glorify the LORD for all He does for us.
Luke 7:11-17
Jesus and His disciples went into a city called Nain; and many people. Nain is southwest of Capernaum which about 25 miles away. It would probably be around sunset. This was a common time for Jewish funerals.
When Jesus came to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.
Jesus came and touched the bier: the bier is an urn or receptacle for keeping the bones of the dead. Those that were carrying the funeral couch stood still. Jesus said, “Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.”
The young man that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And Jesus delivered him to his mother.
There came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, that a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God has visited his people.
And this rumor of Jesus went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.
What Can Be Learned From This Lesson?
Jesus shows His compassion for the widow. Compassion is kindness and concern for the pain of the widow. Jesus told her not to weep. Jesus has compassion for us as well. We are so blessed because we are so loved by Jesus.
We have seen that Jesus has authority over sickness. This lesson shows us that Jesus has authority over death as well. Jesus commanded life to come to the widow’s son and life did come to him. This is such good news for us. You see Jesus has power over death, and as the Son of the LORD God Jesus also defeated death when He rose from the dead. He gave us eternal life so that we can live forever with Him.
Some people get angry and hurt because the LORD does not intervene all the time to bring people they love back to life, or does not heal every illness for their loved ones. It is like with a loving mom and dad that cannot lessen the pain for their children. It does not mean that the parents lack compassion for their children. This also means that the LORD lacks compassion for His children. It means we do not see the bigger picture.
The crowd glorified God and realized, maybe for the first time, that God has visited His people. That is to look after, have cared for, and provides for His people. The Bible tells us the rumor, which means declaration, was spread throughout all Judaea and throughout the entire region around. When we hear about a miracle of the LORD we should also glorify the LORD for His loving kindness and love.
