Coronation of David
David was anointed king over Israel and Judah. He reigned 33 years over all Israel and Judah. David can teach us not to have false images in our lives and to trust and obey the LORD. The LORD will always protect us from our enemies we just have to go to Him in prayer.
2 Samuel 5:1-21
King Saul was dead and the tribes of Israel came to David unto Hebron. They reminded David there were his bone and flesh. They reminded David that when Saul was king it was David that the LORD had sent to deed His people Israel and he should be a captain over Israel.
So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made an alliance with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed David king over Israel.
David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. David reigned over Judah in Hebron seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.
The king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spoke unto David, saying, Except you take away the blind and the lame, you shalt not come in: thinking, David could not come in.
Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion: the same is the city of David. David said on that day, “Whosoever gets up to the water conduit, and smite the Jebusites, and the lame and the blind, that are hated of David’s soul, he shall be chief and captain.” Wherefore they said, “The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.” So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built roundabout from Millo (a place near Shechem the site is unknown but it is a part of the fortifications of Jerusalem) and inward.
And David went on, and grew great, and the LORD God of hosts was with him. And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons: and they built David a house.
And David perceived that the LORD had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel’s sake. David took more wives and concubines out of Jerusalem after he came from Hebron and he had many sons and daughters born to David.
When the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold.
David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? David asked the LORD if He would deliver them into the hands of David. And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into your hand.
David smote the Philistines, and said, The LORD hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place Baalperazim. It was there they left their images, and David and his men burned them.
What Can This Story Teach Us?
David listened to the LORD God and did as he was directed and the LORD did deliver him out of the hand of his enemies. It is important that we ask the LORD to direct us and then to deliver us out of the hand of our enemies. We have to listen, trust and obey the guidance of the LORD in our lives. How can you best accomplish this?
The next lesson we learn from David is David and his men burned all the false images that was left behind from the Philistines. David was faithful and obedient to the LORD God.
Sometimes children do not realize that there are false images in their lives. Anything that is more important in your lives than the Lord Jesus Christ then we should do as David and his men did. They burnt all the false images. Can you think of false images that could be in your life?
Romans 12:9 “Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.”
