Parable of the Fig Tree
It is important that we remember the parable of the fig tree was told just before Jesus was going to be crucified. The things He shared with His beloved disciples are the most important message Jesus wanted to share. The parable of the fig tree is no exception. The main message is to be ready for the coming of Jesus.
Matthew 24:32-44; Mark13:28-37; Luke 21:29-33
Jesus and the disciples were talking privately upon the Mount of Olives. The disciples ask Jesus what the sign of His coming and the end of the world would be. Jesus tells His disciples what to look for then tells this parable.
Jesus told them to learn from the parable of the fig tree. When the branch is tender, and put forth leaves, you know that summer is nigh. So when you see all these things you should know that the Jesus had told the disciples that the end is near, even at the doors. This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
Jesus said Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. That day and hour know man knows. Not even the angels of heaven knows, but only the Heavenly Father knows.
Jesus told the disciples that the coming of the Son of man would be like the days of Noah. It would be like in those days before the flood. There were eating and drinking, marrying and those given in marriage. This was until Noah entered into the ark.
The people did not know until the flood came and took them all away. So shall also the coming of the Son of man be. The Son of man is Jesus. Jesus continued to say then there shall be two in the field, one shall be taken, and the other left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
We are instructed to watch for you do not know what hour your Lord comes. If the Goodman of the house had known in what time the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore you be also ready: for in such an hour as you think not the Son of man comes.
What Can Be Learned From This Lesson?
It is important that we remember the parable of the fig tree was just before Jesus is going to be crucified. The things He is sharing with His beloved disciples are the most important for Jesus to share. The parable of the fig tree is no exception. The main message is to be ready for the coming of Jesus.
The most important preparation you can make is to make sure you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. You have to know and put your trust in the fact that it is Jesus alone that gives salvation.
How does one get ready for an arrival of such an important appearance? If we think about when someone comes to visit us at our home it might help. Your parents might tell you to clean your room, or help to clean up the house. You would have to put on clean clothes and the very best you have.
Do you know what this means? It means that you have to keep yourself clean inside and outside. You cannot allow yourself to be part of this corrupt world. If your friends are bullying a school mate, or making fun of someone different you should not take part of it. You should be listening to you parents and reading the Bible.
Know that Jesus will return one of these days when very few are expecting it and we want Jesus to find us doing what He wants us to do. What does Jesus specifically want you to be doing? How can you prepare your heart and make sure you are doing what Jesus expects you to be doing. You need to have quiet time in prayer and preparing yourself for His return.
Watch and be ready for you do not know what hour your Lord comes. Don’t be caught being lazy, or hating, or hurting others. Don’t be caught in places that Jesus would not want you to be. Keep yourself clean both inside and out doing the special thing that Jesus has chosen you to do.
