Jacob tricks His Father Isaac

The story of Jacob tricking his father Isaac is a reminder that the LORD always knows what is best for His people. All we have to do is trust in Him. Genesis 27:1-46

Isaac was very old and his eyes were dim so that he could not see. He called his oldest son, Esau, to him that he was growing old and knew he would die soon. He asked Esau to take his weapons, the quiver and bow and go out to the field and get some venison for him. Isaac loved the savory meat. Then Isaac would bless Esau before he died.

Rebekah heard what Isaac said to Esau. Esau went to the field to hunt for venison to bring to his father. Rebekah spoke to Jacob about what Isaac, her husband, had told his brother Esau. Rebekah told Jacob to obey her voice and do what she told him to do.

Rebekah told Jacob to go to the flock and bring her two good kids of the goat, and she would make savory meat for Isaac which he loves. Then Jacob would take it to his father that he may eat, and then he would give the blessing to Jacob before his death.

Jacob reminded his mother that Esau was a hairy man, and he was a smooth man. Jacob knew that his father would feel him. That would make Jacob a deceiver and instead of a blessing his father would curse him. His mother told him to do what she had told him to do.

Jacob dis as he was told he fetched the two kids of the goat for his mother to make the savory meat for Isaac. Then Rebekah took the raiment of her eldest son Esau, and put them upon Jacob. Rebekah put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck. Then gave him the savory meat and the bread she had prepared to take to his father Isaac. Jacob went into his father, and said “I am Esau your firstborn; I have done according to what you ask me to do. Arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that your soul may bless me.” When Isaac asked how he could get the venison so quickly Jacob said the LORD brought it to him.

Isaac did feel the hands of Jacob’s hands to make sure that he was talking to Esau. Isaac recognized it was the voice of Jacob but the hands are of Esau. Because the hands were hairy as Esau’s hands were hairy. Isaac ate the venison and drank wine then he kissed Jacob and smelled the raiment with the smell of the field on it; so Isaac blessed Jacob.
The bless Isaac gave was “Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine: Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother’s sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.”(Genesis 27:28-29).

When Esau came home from hunting he also made savory meat and brought it to his father, Isaac. Isaac asked who he was then he realized what had happen. Esau cried a bitter cry and asked his father to bless him as well. He was upset because Jacob had taken away his birthright and now the blessing. Isaac told Esau that Jacob was made lord, and all his brethren had been given to him for servants, Jacob was sustained with corn and wine. Isaac told Esau that his dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth and of the dew of heaven from above; and by his sword he shall live, and shall serve Jacob.

Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing he receive from his father. He had made plans to slay Jacob after his father had died. These words Esau told to his mother. Rebekah told Jacob that his brother was masking plans to kill him and told him to flee to Laban her brother who lived at Haran.

What Can This Story Teach Us?

Esau made a huge mistake when he sold his brother his birthright for a pot of stew. He must have regretted that mistake. Then he lost the blessing. Esau was left to live by the sword. If Jacob would not have been sent away to find a wife from the family of her brother then Esau would have to serve Jacob. Esau hated his brother. We have to be so careful that our actions do not cause us to lose our family. Esau should have trusted in the LORD to do what was right for him instead of trying to control the situations in his life.
Jacob also suffered for doing wrong. He never saw his mother again. The LORD promised Jacob the birthright and Jacob should have trusted in the LORD instead of taking matters into his own hands. The LORD always knows what is best for His people.
