What happened on Holy Tuesday?
Jesus ministered and taught His disciples. The Pharisees, chief priests and the elders try to trick Jesus so they can prove Him wrong and crucify Him. Holy Tuesday is the day of teaching for the multitude and His disciples, the scribes, Pharisees, chief priest and the elders of the people. Matthew 21:20- Matthew 25
Jesus woke up Tuesday morning and returned into the city and was hungry. There we find the telling of The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree. Matthew 21:18-22 gives us an important message about faith and prayer. Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, “Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”
Jesus came into the temple and the chief priests and the elders heard Jesus preaching and asked Jesus who gave him His authority. Jesus knew they were asking a trick question and ask them where the baptism of John came from. They could not answer. Jesus told them since they could not answer that question He would not tell them by what authority He does the things He does. (Matthew 21:23-27).
Instead Jesus taught that the Parable of the Two Sons. There was a certain man who had two sons. This parable teaches that the publicans and the harlots will go into the kingdom of God before the chief priests and elders. (Matthew 21:23-27).
Jesus then told the parable of the Parable of the Tenants. The landowner – represents the LORD God; The vineyard – His Kingdom; The tenants – specifically Israel’s religious leaders and all who reject Jesus; The servants The prophets and faithful believers of the LORD God; The beloved son – Jesus Christ. (Matthew 21:33-45).
Jesus asked the Pharisees and chief priests what they thought the master of the house would do to the husbandmen. They knew that they would be destroyed. Then the Pharisees and chief priests realized that Jesus had been speaking about them.
Jesus then told them another parable so they could better understand. It was the Parable of the Wedding Feast. The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, who made a marriage for his son, and sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. (Matthew 22:1-14).
The cross is the only way to salvation. Our wedding garment is Jesus Christ Himself, and unless we put Him on, we will miss the wedding feast. The punishment for refusing the salvation of Jesus Christ is just like the man who refused to wear the wedding garment “Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called, but few are chosen.” Matthew 22:14.
Again the Pharisees continued to try to trick Jesus and ask if it was lawful to give tribute unto Caesar. Jesus was not tricked and told them to show him the tribute money and ask whose image was on it. Then answered their question by saying “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.” (Matthew 22:21).
The Sadducees, who do not believe in the resurrection, asked Jesus if a man dies leaving no children then his brother shall marry his wife so the dead brother could have children. The Sadducees kept this line of questioning up until there were seven brothers and then the woman died. The Sadducees wanted to know in the resurrection whose wife would she be. (Matthew 22: 23-28).
Jesus told them that they have erred, and they do not know the scriptures, nor do they know the power of God. In the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. (Matthew 22: 29 -33).
It did not stop there one of the lawyers ask Jesus a question to test Him and ask which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus answered, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” (Matthew 22: 34-40).
While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them who they thought of the Christ, who they thought He was the son of. The Pharisees said the Christ was the Son of David. Jesus wanted to know then how David called Him Lord, saying; “The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?” (Matthew 22: 41-46).
Jesus then asks the question if David then called him Lord, how is he his son? With that no man was able to answer him a word; neither did any man for that day forth ask Him any more questions. Jesus had won that battle.
Jesus then turned His attention to the multitude and His disciples, saying that the scribes and the Pharisees sit at the head of the government and whatever thy say to do you do. Jesus said do not follow after the scribes and Pharisees because they do not do what they say. (Matthew 23:1-3).
Jesus told the multitudes and His disciples that the scribes and Pharisees place heavy and grievous burdens on men’s shoulders but they do nothing. They make a great show of their power by sitting in the best room at a feast, and the chief seats in the synagogues. (Matthew 23:4-7).
Jesus tells us we should not claim to be a great teacher: for one is your Master, even Christ and all you are brothers. Call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Neither be you called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. (Matthew 23:8-12).
Jesus gave many warnings to the scribes and Pharisees. They are hypocrites and shut up the kingdom of heaven against men. There are many things that Jesus has against the scribes and Pharisees. These can be found from Matthew 23:13-33.
Jesus reminds them that He sent unto them prophets, wise men, scribes; and some of them they shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall you scourge meaning to torment or devastate in the synagogues and persecute them from city to city. Jesus told them all these things shall come upon this generation. (Matthew 23:34-36).
Then Jesus says: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.” (Matthew 23:37-39).
Matthew 24:1-31 finds Jesus is sitting upon the Mount of Olives, when the disciples came to Him privately. Now Jesus is speaking to just His disciples when they ask Him what the sign of His coming, and the end of the world be. It was important for Jesus to tell His disciples what the signs would be for His second coming and of the end of the world would be. We need to be watchful and waiting for the return of Jesus. We must be careful not to be deceived by anyone claiming to be Jesus Christ.
Jesus told them to learn from the parable of the fig tree. When the branch is tender, and put forth leaves, you know that summer is nigh. So when you see all these things you should know that the Jesus had told the disciples that the end is near, even at the doors. This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. Jesus said Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. That day and hour know man knows. Not even the angels of heaven know, but only the Heavenly Father knows. (Matthew 24:32-44).
Jesus then tells the Parable of the faithful or wicked servant. The Parable of the Faithful and Unfaithful Servants instructs us to keep watch because you do not know at what hour your Lord comes. Jesus looks at both the faithful and unfaithful servants who the master has made ruler over his household. (Matthew 24:45-51).
The parable of the ten virgins, in which, five ran out of oil for their lamps is an example of being prepared. We must be always aware that our lamps are that illumination of Jesus Christ. We must be watchful and prepared not to run out of that illumination and be already ready for the return of Christ. (Matthew 25:1-13).
The next parable Jesus told was reminding them to be ready and watch because no one knows the day or the hour when the Son of man comes, the Son of man is Jesus. Then Jesus told the parable about the kingdom of heaven is as a man traveling into a far country. This man called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. The good was his possessions or property it is the substance that belongs to this man. (Matthew 25:14-30).
Jesus ends Holy Tuesday by telling us “When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:” Jesus instructs us to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, cloth the naked, care for the sick and visit those in prison. (Matthew 25:31-46).
