Zions Bank is first bank to use fingerprint biometrics for regular transactions - 07/11/2006

Zions First National Bank, Salt Lake City, are setting up finer scanners at a dozen branch office in Utah and Idaho. These scanners will identify customers by geometric patterns on an index finger. They are the first known bank to use biometrics for regular transactions.

"The more consumers feel comfortable with biometrics, the more you'll see it in various applications," said John Hall, a spokesman for the 8,000-member American Bankers Association. "Customers always want their transactions to go through quickly, and perhaps this will all for that and more security." About 350 banks in North America, including Zions, are using hand geometry systems to clear customers into safe deposit vaults. Some foreign banks operate ATMs that use finger, iris or hand-palm scans.

Finger scanners are being used at checkout stands of some major grocery chains so customers can pay for items with just a touch of a finger, said Gary Bradt, a vice president for Silex Technology America Inc., which makes the devices for computer and laptop security.

Toothbrush plays music inside the head of kids - 10/12/2006

"Tooth Tunes" toothbrush is being marketed by Hasbro's Tiger Electronics division as a popular and cool experience for kids as they brush their teeth.

The toothbrush, which comes in 18 varieties, has two-minute songs of popular artists songs that play as the teeth are brushed. When the user pushes the button on the manual toothbrush and the bristles are brushed across the teeth, they send sound waves through them so the user hears the song in his head. The better the children brush, the better they hear the music.

The brush technology that brings the sound waves into the head of children, was developed over two years, and will be marketed in a multi-million-dollar advertising campaign that will begin on October 23, 2006.
